An angioma is a benign growth that consists of small blood vessels. There are many various types of angiomas & can be located anywhere on the body. Some of the different types include spider angiomas and cherry angiomas. The cause of most types of angiomas is not known. Cherry angiomas are due to aging and do not have any known significance. Spider angioma, also known as spider naevus or spider telangiectasia, is a vascular lesion, characterized by anomalous dilatation of end vasculature, found just beneath the skin surface. The lesion contains a central, red spot and reddish extensions which radiate outward like a spider’s web.

Angiomas:  noncancerous, common skin growths made up of blood vessels, resembling a red or purple mole cluster  or ‘web’ of dilated blood vessels.

  • Cherry angiomas: These are also called senile angioma, Campbell de Morgan spots, or de Morgan spots. Cherry angiomas appear on any part of the body but usually appear on the trunk.
  • Spider angiomas: These have red dot centers and groups of dilated blood vessels around it, like a spider web. They’re common in children, people with liver disease, and they frequently appear during pregnancy in women who take birth control pills. Spider angiomas appear most often on the face and chest.
  • Venous lakes: These appear on the lips and ears and are usually bluish but can be red or purple. They are most common in men over 65 who have had extensive sun exposure.

How do lasers treat & Remove Angiomas?

Laser treatment is one of the most popular and most sought-after treatments that provide a solution to the care and removal of angiomas. At Kovak Cosmetic Center, we boast many different options that treat all colors and sizes of angiomas. During laser treatment, laser energy passes through the skin and is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood vessels within the angioma. The heat that is produced by the laser destroys the blood vessels and allows the body to naturally remove the angioma without harming the tissue surrounding the area.

Spider Angiomas – Nevus Araneus (Spider Nevus)

Nevus araneus, also known as spider angioma or spider nevus, is a common benign vascular lesion present in 10-15% of healthy adults and young children. They may appear as a solitary or multiple lesions. In particular, when multiple lesions are present, liver disease, estrogen therapy, and thyrotoxicosis should be considered. The name stems from its physical appearance, which is characterized by a central red arteriole, or punctum, representing the body of the spider, surrounded by a radial pattern of thin-walled capillaries, resembling legs .

Spider Angiomas – Signs & Symptoms

Nevus araneus (spider nevus): in the center of the red lesion a small (1 mm) red papule is visible, surrounded by several distinct radiating vessels. Pressure on the lesion causes it to disappear, however blanching is replaced by rapid refill from the central arteriole when pressure is released.

Spider angiomas & multiple cluster spider angiomas are found only in the distribution of the superior vena cava, and are thus commonly found on the face, neck, upper part of the torso, and arms. A spider nevus consists of a central arteriole with radiating thin-walled vessels. Compression of the central vessel produces blanching and temporarily obliterates the lesion. When released, the threadlike vessels quickly refill with blood from the central arteriole. The ascending central arteriole resembles a spider’s body, and the radiating fine vessels resemble multiple spider webs.

All About Cherry Angiomas – (Red Moles)

Cherry Angioma Info - How to Remove Angiomas

Cherry Angiomas or red moles are very common and can be located on different parts of the body. Most adults have at least one mole on their body, which does not pose a risk to their health. Red moles are non-cancerous growths made up of a cluster of blood vessels. They are characterized by their bright red color and small size, about a quarter of an inch big. The particular reason for red moles is unknown, but researchers tend to lean towards genetics being the leading cause.

Causes:
The exact cause of Cherry Angiomas is unknown. Genetic predispositions are usually believed to be a major cause. Other than that, pregnancy, climate and chemical exposure have also been said to cause Cherry Angiomas.

An obvious link, however, has been established between age and the appearance of Cherry Angiomas. Usually, people over 30 develop Cherry Angiomas, which only seem to augment in number and size with age.

Symptoms:
There are no other specific symptoms of Cherry Angiomas, except for the benign growths on the skin. The skin growths are usually characterized by:

  • Vivid, cherry-red color
  • Small sizes
  • Smooth growths which are close to the skin’s surface, or are raised

The Cherry Angioma appears bright red, oval or circular in shape and are small in size. They can either be smooth, and close to the skin’s surface, or they can be marginally raised. They mostly appear on the arms, shoulders and torso. If the Angioma is agitated, scratched, cut open, or rubbed, etc. – it might result in intense bleeding in some cases.

Cherry Angioma Removal SERVICES in Chicago (Oakbrook Terrace, IL)

It’s not necessary for cherry angiomas to be removed as they pose no risk to the overall health of a person. Depending on the location of the red mole, usually the face, it will be removed for cosmetic reasons. Another popular reason for the removal of cherry angiomas is if they are located in a place that is easily irritated, such as under the armpit or on the hands. At Kovak Cosmetic Center, we have various treatments that can remove these annoying red moles, some of which include:

  • Electro-cauterization- This treatment uses an electric current to burn off the angioma. The electricity is passed through a small probe directly attacking the red mole.
  • Cryosurgery-  Using liquid nitrogen, the angioma is frozen off. This is one of the quickest and easiest procedures for the removal of red moles.
  • Laser Surgery: This is a common procedure done at Kovak Cosmetic Center for its quick process and permanent results. During treatment, a laser damages the red mole breaking up the cluster of blood cells.
